Section 6 football seeds official: F/E 1st, Salamanca 5th
Sections 6 released its high school football playoff seedings and matchups Sunday, slating Franklinville/Ellicottville with the first seed in Class D and Salamanca the fifth, as expected.
All eight teams in Section 6 Class D make the playoffs, including five Big 30 teams led by unbeaten No. 1 seed F/E (7-0), which will host No. 8 Portville (1-6) Friday night. The Titans, led by coach Chad Bartoszek and a talented cast of seniors including quarterback Brock Blecha, were the only New York Big 30 team to earn a home playoff opener.
Also in Class D, Salamanca, Cattaraugus-Little Valley and Randolph/Frewsburg will have road playoff games. The Warriors (4-3) earned the fifth seed and visit No. 4 Chautauqua Lake (2-4) on Friday. Salamanca didn’t play Chautauqua Lake this year due to the unbalanced league schedule. Chautauqua Lake beat Salamanca 23-12 in Week 3 of 2016.
Recalling last year’s game, Warriors coach Paul Haley was impressed with the Thunderbirds’ quarterback, Devin Pope.
“They've got a good quarterback who likes to throw the ball around a little bit,” Haley said. “He's one of the better ones in our league and he likes to throw it around. Our pass defense is definitely going to have to be on our toes and we'll have to get some pressure in there. We can't just expect our DBs to bail us out. “
The first-year merged R/F team (3-4) finished seventh and visits its rival, No. 2 Maple Grove (6-1) on Friday. In Week 6, Maple Grove beat R/F, 39-6.
On Saturday, No. 6 C-LV (3-4) travels to Clymer to play No. 3 Clymer/Sherman/Panama (5-2). CSP beat C-LV in Week 2, 41-18.
The two highest seeds to lose in Class D this weekend will play in the Chuck Funke Classic consolation game Oct. 26 at Cattaraugus-Little Valley.
