CSP rolls to win after play resumes in Salamanca
SALAMANCA — Clymer/Sherman/Panama played a 20-point quarter, drove home and came back in the morning to score another 20 in its next quarter of football on Saturday.
The pair of dominant quarters over Friday night and Saturday morning showed why the Wolfpack currently ranks No. 1 in New York State in Class D and spoiled Homecoming for Salamanca, which fell 47-19.
The teams attempted to play their Section 6 Class D league matchup Friday, moving up a 7 p.m. kickoff to 5:30, but a tornado warning west of Salamanca caused an evacuation and suspension of play after the final play of the first quarter with CSP holding a 20-6 lead. After an hour-long delay for a thunderstorm and heavy rain, officials pushed the rest of the game to Saturday, when the Wolfpack extended a 40-6 halftime lead and left with its perfect record (4-0, 3-0) intact.
"That was a unique situation," CSP coach Ty Harper said of the delay and suspension. "I've never seen anything like that before and there's really nothing you can do to plan for that, but I am proud of the way the guys handled basically every adverse situation that was put in front of us. We got a call (Friday) around 1:30 to move the kickoff up so that kind of threw off our schedule yesterday, got on the bus early, came over here, played a quarter, felt like we had some good momentum going. Then we're back in the locker room for an hour, they tell us you've got to come back tomorrow morning, we're going to postpone it.
"But really there's nothing you can do, it's just a matter of handling an adverse situation and you have that all the time in sports and our guys did a good job with that."
CSP’s John Swabik ran back the opening kickoff 83 yards, but Salamanca responded with a 69-yard drive capped by Zariah Armstrong’s 37-yard pass to Tyler Hedlund for an early 6-6 tie. But it would be all Wolfpack from there until the fourth quarter, scoring the next 41 points.
CSP running back Michael Beatman compiled 173 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Quarterback Gerrit Hinsdale was 7-of-9 for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Derek Ecklund scored twice, on a 21-yard run and 5-yard pass from Hinsdale.
The Wolfpack never punted and had just one turnover on downs in the fourth quarter with its second-string offense. CSP defensive back Cam Meeder produced the game’s only turnover on an interception.
"They're awesome across the board," Salamanca coach Paul Haley said of CSP. "They don't have any weaknesses and 21 (linebacker Robert Overton) on defense, that kid was an animal. We couldn't get an answer for him and the two guys on the outside could have picked us apart all day, 8 (Chance Meeder) and 2 (Cameron Barmore) and their running backs (Beatman and Ecklund), those kids just run tough. Their schemes are great. They're No. 1 for a reason. That's the best team around and they're going to be tough to beat down the stretch."
For Salamanca, Hedlund added another touchdown on a 75-yard run in the fourth quarter and sophomore Lucas McKenna threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Gregory. Gaining almost half of Salamanca’s total rushing yardage (152) on one play, Hedlund finished with seven carries for 101 yards and two catches for 49 yards.
With an excited team ready for its homecoming game, Salamanca coach Paul Haley thought the weather hurt the game's flow, but the Wolfpack had the added difficulty of travel.
"I felt bad for CSP, they had to go an hour and a half both ways four times now," Haley said. "It really just throws everything off. You're a creature of habit. It throws off your timing, everything's an hour and a half (early) last night. Today, you're not used to playing in the day and it makes a big difference."
The Warriors were without running back/linebacker Xavier Taylor this week and Armstrong and running back/linebacker Ira John both sat out the second half with injuries. Haley hopes his team can get healthy and clean up mistakes before its Week 5 rematch with Cattaraugus-Little Valley, who the Warriors beat 26-20 on a last-minute touchdown in the season opener.
"We've had three tough games with them the last two years," Haley said. "We don't do anything easy on ourselves, that's for sure. That's a huge game for us. Catt-Little Valley's a huge game and from here on out we've got to put the pedal down and we've got to start cleaning up these mistakes. Our line shuffle continued this week and I thought we had some good things out of our line this week. We've still got a ways to go, but there's definitely some positives to take out of it."
While the result was never in question in the second half, Salamanca's two late scores made it the closest game of CSP's season so far (it beat Portville by 40, Maple Grove by 35 and C-LV by 42). So far, the Wolfpack appears to live up to expectations as the preseason league favorite and now No. 1 Class D team in the state with another run through the league opponents ahead on a home-and-home schedule.
"I think we can only worry about getting better ourselves," Harper said of the heavy expectations. "It's a tough league and every team is well-coached and we know we're going to see them all at least one more time. We just need to control what we can on our end and keep improving. You saw us today, I don't know how many penalties we had (six for 70 yards), but there's plenty of things we can get better at and we're just going to try to improve every week. I know that sounds cliche, but we just need to keep getting better ourselves."
