Salamanca’s Hedlund named Section 6 Class D Co-DPOY
Salamanca safety Tyler Hedlund won a Section 6 Class D Defensive Player of the Year award for his senior season, leading a group of six Warriors named to the league’s first-team all-stars.
Hedlund finished the season with 97 tackles, one sack, three interceptions a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He shared the co-DPOY award with Clymer/Sherman/Panama linebacker Robert Overton, who had 60 tackles (15 for loss), two sacks, three forced fumbles and three recoveries.
In other major awards, state champion CSP also won the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, for running back Derek Ecklund and Coach Ty Harper. Ecklund finished with 1,136 yards rushing (6.7 yards per carry) with six 100-yard games, 152 receiving yards and 19 total touchdowns.
Maple Grove’s Easton Tanner won Offensive Player of the Year. Tanner recorded 834 rushing yards, 766 receiving and 278 passing this season with 27 total touchdowns (10 rushing, 11 receiving, five passing, one punt return).
Also making the first-team all-stars for Salamanca were five seniors: running back Ira John, offensive linemen Asa John and Nik Milks and linebackers Xavier Taylor and Tristen Gillette. Freshman Kody Shinners, junior Kawliga Stahlman and senior Zach Helms made the second team and senior Zariah Armstrong, junior Jarrett McKenna and sophomore Lucas McKenna were honorable mentions.
Hedlund, John and Nyles Panus made the All-Academic Team.
From Cattaraugus-Little Valley, junior defensive lineman Vinnie Pascarella and senior defensive back Sam Grey made the first-team all-stars. Junior Hunter Furl and seniors Jason Miller and Damion Ly made the second team while Brodie Hill, Michael Perkins, Nick Burroughs and Jake Harris made honorable mention.
Grey made the All-Academic Team. The Timberwolves also won the team sportsmanship award with Ly as player representative.
